But those who wait on the LORD Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with
wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.

Father's Day or other traditional times to honor a father can be difficult
if one’s father is absent by death or another reason. The following prayers — a prayer
for an absent father, prayer for a deceased father, and blessing for the grief of
missing a father — enable the Christian to offer his/her lost father to God.

For those adults and children whose fathers left them, via divorce, neglect,
family conflict, or death, thinking of an absent father can be painful. The following
prayer invites God to heal the child of any age missing his/her father:
“God of mysteries, I don’t know why Dad [insert reason father left]. Only You know
the hole in my heart that Dad left. Fill that hole with Your love, and heal me. Remind
me that I am Your beloved child, with whom You are well pleased. You, O God, will
never abandon me. Bless me and lead me to others who will protect and teach me as
a father should. Let me, also, share the love of a father with others, in the light
of Your love. Amen.”
Prayer for a Deceased Father
Visiting Dad’s grave on Father's Day or on his birthday can bring up a whirlwind
of emotions and memories. The following prayer for missing a deceased father can
be an appropriate prayer while visiting the grave site or at any time an intense
longing for one's father resurfaces:
“God of life and death, care for Dad now as he cared for me and others here on earth.
Let his memory continue to bless me and form me into the fullness of Your love. [Share
specific memories of Dad with God, if desired]. Guard Dad and keep him safe in heaven
as he guarded me here on earth. Amen.”
An individual might offer this prayer aloud at the grave site of a father. Some
may opt to share specific memories of the deceased, so that children and other family
members present may honor Dad's memory, too.
Sharing the Lord’ Prayer of another familiar prayer together as a family can
create a simple service in honor of the father at the grave site.
Blessing for Grief over Missing Dad
The grieving process over any loss is a lifetime journey. Missing a father
is a special loss, because there is a special bond. The following prayer offers the
tears over missing father to God:
"God of love, keep each tear I shed for Dad's absence and bottle it. Let me cry and
open my heart to You, that You may ever heal my wounded heart. Be with me and cleanse
me to share love with others, as Dad shared love with me. . Amen."
Missing a father leaves a hole that nothing can adequately fill. With prayer, a Christian
can invite God into healing an absent father during the holidays, Father's Day, or
other times when the pain of the dad's absence surfaces.
